Acne can affect the meibomian glands

People with this condition may be more susceptible to gland damage and tear instability, according to a recent study published in Clinical and Experimental Optometry.
The research team from Turkey hypothesized that since acne is a disease of the
sebaceous glands, it could have potential effects on the ocular surface and
tear homeostasis.
The research enrolled the right eyes of 70 subjects (34 acne patients and 36 healthy). The study
included tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer test, cytology from
conjunctival samples, and meibography of the upper and lower eyelids.
Researchers found that TBUT was significantly lower in the study group, but the
Conjunctival cytologic impression results were similar between both
acne subjects and healthy volunteers. In addition, the researchers observed no grade 3 cytological changes in either group.

Meibomian gland loss in the upper eyelid of acne patients was about 19% compared to about 9% in controls. Meibomian gland loss in the lower eyelid of subjects with acne was also greater at approximately 16% compared to approximately 8% in healthy participants.
In light of the study findings, a detailed ophthalmic
examination should be performed in acne patients, the researchers suggested. In addition, optometrists should remain
alert to ocular surface pathologies when prescribing glasses or
contact lenses for the visual rehabilitation of these young patients, they added.
