Stress also ages the eyes

A University of California (UCI) study found that the effect of intraocular
fluctuations (IOP) is directly responsible for the aging of the retinal tissue, a
important component of retinal ganglion cell death in glaucoma.
Together with her colleagues at UCI, Dr. Dorota Skowronska‐Krawczyk, member of the Center
of Vision Research and assistant professor in the Departments of Physiology & Biophysics and Ophthalmology,
described the transcriptional and epigenetic changes that occur in aging
mouse retinas in Aging Cell. The group showed that stress, such as increased
IOP induced retinal tissue to undergo epigenetic and transcriptional changes
similar to natural aging. In young retinal tissue, repetitive stress
induced features of accelerated aging, including accelerated
epigenetic age. "Our work highlights the importance of early diagnosis and prevention for
age management of age-related diseases, including glaucoma';
said Dr. Skowronska-Krawczyk. “The epigenetic changes we observed suggest that the
changes at the chromatin level are acquired in a cumulative manner, after several
cases of stress. This gives us a window of opportunity to prevent vision loss if and when the disease is recognized early."
