Walking leads to increased processing of peripheral visual inputs
How do we perceive our environment? What is the effect of sensory
stimuli on the peripheral nervous system and the brain? Science
is interested in this question for many reasons. In the long term, information
from this research could contribute to a better understanding of diseases
such as ADHD and Parkinson's disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perception and the underlying neural activities are usually measured while
individuals are sitting or lying down, for example while having an MRI. Normally, the head is steady and people are encouraged not to blink. The
measurements are therefore performed under well-controlled but rather unnatural
conditions.
When processing visual stimuli, however, there is a difference whether the subject
is sitting or moving: When walking, the peripheral part of the visual field shows
improved processing compared to the central part. This can be demonstrated
both by the subjects' behaviorally measured perception and by their

firing rate in visual areas of the brain,\" says Dr. H\u00e4ndel. So far,
there are only a few human behavioral experiments investigating the
effect of movement on sensory areas. However, there is evidence that
