Macular Disease Foundation Australia's (MDFA) first social impact survey
revealed that a quarter of patients have low levels of knowledge about
their situation, with about the same percentage less satisfied with her explanation
of their disease by the eye professional.
The organization's inaugural longitudinal study was produced by the Social Center
of Impact and the School of Optometry and Vision Science at UNSW.
2,169 respondents participated (response rate 13.2%) in various forms
macular disease that have been involved with MDFA for more than two
years. Her aim was to capture the perception of patients at three levels: individual,
service and system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the MDFA, a key finding showed that although 97% of respondents
they could access information about their illness through
of multiple sources, 25% had only \"little to poor\" knowledge of their condition.
\u201cThose with higher levels of eye health knowledge tend to report
higher levels of life satisfaction and the majority of patients were
satisfied with the disease information given to them by the optometrist
according to MDFA chief executive Ms Dee Hopkins.

of their condition and 35% were not satisfied with the health professional's knowledge
their eyes on available support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interestingly, the survey also found that 66% of the first respondents
AMD were taking supplements, despite a lack of evidence showing a slowdown
of development in this group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
